Calla Lily
The Calla Lily holds a special place in my heart, deeply connected to my Latin American upbringing. These two examples showcase how my origami approach to this beloved flower has evolved over time.
The version of the origami flower against the blue background, created in 2013, represents my earlier exploration of the form, constructed from two squares and a longer paper strip for the stem, with the yellow spadix crafted from an additional square that fits perfectly into flaps underneath the spathe. This design captures the essential elegance of the calla lily in its pure, botanical form.
By 2025, my origami design had transformed into something more personal and symbolic. In the version with the green background, I incorporated the flower into a heart shape, again using an additional square for the spadix that tucks seamlessly into the interior flaps, allowing the natural curves of the calla lily to echo within this heart-shaped framework.
This evolution reflects not just my growing technical skills in creating these connections, but also my desire to infuse the design with deeper meaning, illustrating through form my lifelong affection for this graceful flower that connects me to my cultural roots.
