The Checkered Trickster
I kicked off 2026 by folding my very first model of the year: 'The Checkered Trickster', my take on Fynn Jackson's Mask 13.
It all started at a family dinner at a museum's restaurant. While we were eating, I noticed this green-and-white checkered waxed paper, with a nice subtle sheen, lining the food baskets. I asked if I could take a few sheets home (they said yes!), and I immediately thought that it could give a face fold a playful vibe, akin to a secret game board coming to life.
The catch? Waxed deli paper is thin, slippery and terrible for intricate curved folds. I decided to layer it with the thicker Canson Mi-Teintes paper. The combined paper held creases beautifully, and the checkered layer really brought the mask’s character out in the final fold.
Shaping and photographing this mask was pure fun. The checks stretched across the brows and warped over the sly grin. I spent hours playing with light to highlight the mask's facial features and the green gleam of the paper.
Who knew that deli paper, often trashed after a meal, could do some origami magic?
