Mayfly, by Brian Chan
This mayfly is folded from an ultra-thin, custom-colored 2.9gsm sheet — a material so delicate it becomes the true subject of the artwork, not the model. The paper was tinted with extreme subtlety, because at this thickness every layer deepens the tone; the final colours emerge naturally through the folding process rather than what was given at the start.
The wings reveal the unique beauty of this material: nearly invisible, like mist or morning frost, catching light with a faint metallic shimmer before vanishing again. Although the paper has almost no strength, every crease had to be placed with absolute precision to avoid tearing. The result is a model that exists to showcase the poetry of ultra thin paper — weightless, fragile, and luminous, holding presence only for a fleeting moment, just like the mayfly itself.
