Le Visage
La Visage (The Face) is a model designed by me. I created a crease pattern with the correct proportions of a human face, and wanted to show that from this crease pattern, any human face can be made.
I included features such as cheekbones, nose, eyes, mouth, and chin as separate flaps of the crease pattern. Once the crease pattern is collapsed, the folder can choose any style to shape these features. In this model, I chose to give the face high cheekbones, a button nose, flat broad lips, a broad chin and slightly rounded eyes. So, we can clearly see that the final shaping of facial features can be controlled by the folder.
The upper face region including the brow bone and the forehead is a flap extending from the eyes. In this model, I added an eyebrow ridge to emphasize the brow bone, and smoothed the rest of the forehead to indicate a neutral expression. Again, after collapsing the crease pattern, this area of the face can be shaped to look hyper-realistic, with just simple folds and curving.
Finally, the rectangular hair flaps extend from the sides and the top of the face. These flaps can be customized as per the folder’s artistic style. In this model, I chose to add curves to the hair to indicate a cascading effect and make it look more dynamic. Furthermore, a part of the hair flap is pulled forward to form an ear.
Through this model, I wanted to highlight the potential of a simple and reproducible crease pattern to form a customizable, hyper-realistic product – something which is not so commonly seen in this type of model in origami.
