Folding Between Us
This work is a collaboration between Dexter Namkung and Neel Dalela.
Community is the circulation of experience: asking for help with struggles, and offering it once you’re ready to give back. In our case, we each learned our different approaches to origami design and how to formulate our different experiences and styles into a coherent design. Neel used an intuition-led approach by integrating his experience with humanoid shaping and study of visual arts into the model, while Dex used his formal experience in design theory through origami software to design the crease pattern for this model.
Through seven hours of calls, we decided what our design should contain and tested our ideas tangibly and abstractly – discussing what elements the design should contain, and testing ideas through multiple iterations of test-folding and using online simulators to ensure the model is foldable, and doesn’t self-intersect.
Reconciling our approaches led us to invent a design neither of us could’ve brought to life independently. Our design depicts two figures sitting at a table folding a design. This perfectly mirrors collaboration and community - that is each one is contributing their own ideas and working together to achieve something.
